I highly recommend Suzy to anyone seeking a professional, highly skilled, reliable and caring Tutor. The fact that she's an examiner makes all the difference as she applies these skills to her teaching, helping students identify and address any weaknesses they may have, before the exams arrive.

Put simply, Suzy is brilliant at what she does!

FAQs

Your Questions Answered

Is online group tutoring as good as 1-1? Yes and in many ways, it’s better! Students benefit from expert guidance and the motivation and ideas of a small, focused peer group.

How big are the groups? I aim to keep group sizes close to 10. Beyond this, it compromises my ability to give all students constant feedback during the lesson to guide them as well as if it was a 1-1 session. This is why I control the intake into the Academy so I can run additional sessions when needed.

How can you give 1-1 style feedback in a group as effectively as in a 1-1 private tuition lesson? The answer to this lies in technology. Using the zoom whiteboard, chat function and polls, I can instantly gauge student’s quick answers to assess their progress. For longer pieces of writing – analysis, parts of essays, descriptive paragraphs etc, I use software that presents every student’s work on my screen at once, live, as they are typing. This allows me to look for errors, misunderstandings and students who need further support immediately – as soon as they begin. I can give feedback privately to the student in real time and they can use this to make immediate progress. It also has the lovely function of allowing students to view each other’s work, especially useful if they are lacking confidence and want to see how others have done. Another advantage of group learning over 1-1!

What makes this different from school English lessons? We go beyond the classroom – focusing on what examiners actually want and how to show it. The Academy is built around mastering the skills that make great answers and it’s the mastery of this content that allows students to excel in English. This is what makes the difference!

What if we need 1-1 tuition as well? Academy members can add 1-1 support if they feel this is needed

Is this suitable for resit students or those working at a 3 or 4? Yes. Lessons are designed to stretch and support students at every level – from resit to reaching for Grade 9.

Is the Academy suitable for students sitting any exam board? Yes. As the Academy follows a mastery model, work is based around building skills in the Assessment Objectives. These are set by OFQUAL and are the same for each exam board. When looking at exam questions, students will be offered a style choice to select from enabling them to select the style of questions which matches their exam board.

What set texts do you cover in literature? The set texts covered in the Academy are: An Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol, Jekyll and Hyde, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Power and Conflict poetry, Love and Relationship poetry and Worlds and Lives poetry anthologies. Each week, students will find at least one literature lesson which is relevant to their studies. In many weeks, both lessons will be relevant. Students are welcome to attend all literature sessions.

Do you run different sessions for different year groups? No. Quite simply because this isn’t how GCSE is set up. As English is not tiered, everyone sits the same paper. A year 10 student and a Year 11 student working at a grade 5 needs the same targets and advice to get to grade 6. Therefore, splitting content by year group isn’t necessary. As content is skills based, all students will be able to keep up with the content of learning.

Can my child join if they are in Year 9? Many schools begin GCSE in year 9 and a year 9 student will make excellent progress in the Academy. They will likely find the Academy content challenging, however if they are a resilient learner, this should only help them to progress more quickly!

My child is in year 10. What if they want to continue with the Academy into year 11? The Academy content differs from year to year so a year 10 student this year will have new content next year. The only thing that stays the same is the exam skills as we follow a mastery approach.

How does a lesson cater for a grade 4 student and a grade 8 student simultaneously? This is the magic of teaching. Many schools now are moving away from setting or banding in English because research shows that it doesn’t impact student progress and has a negative impact at the lower end. Students learn best when they hear a range of ideas. Sometimes a Grade 4 student will have an insight that hasn’t occurred to the grade 9 student, and this deepens their understanding. At the other end of the scale, the grade 4 student needs access to those excellent ideas to help push their thinking. It’s this collaboration into a shared space that matters. As students are given individual feedback and guidance during lessons, the ability of the student doesn’t matter.

Does my child have to have their camera and mic on during the lesson? No. All students are asked to turn their cameras off for safeguarding reasons. Students can unmute if they would like to, but this is voluntary. Students can type in the chat function instead if they would rather. This anonymity supports students to feel more confident and erases the embarrassment many students feel if asked a question they don’t know the answer to. Students will not be “cold called” on to answer a question but invited ‘en mass’ to share a thought in the chat.

Online learning didn’t work for us during lockdown – how is this different? This isn’t passive Zoom. Online learning has come a very long way since then! It’s active learning with an experienced teacher who knows how to get the best out of students online and who uses the best online tools to enhance student experience. This is not PowerPoint. This is interactive, immersive teaching!
